Start with the day you want to live

Before a viewing, write down the routines a home needs to support. Think about where you work, how often you host, who shares the space and what you need within easy reach. Separate essential needs from preferences. A clear brief makes it easier to compare properties without letting the first impression decide everything.

Walk the journey, not just the rooms

Plan a visit around a journey you actually make. Notice the route from the street to the entrance, the parking arrangements and the walk to the front door. Ask how visitors and deliveries are handled. For a Lagos home, consider how the location fits your regular journeys rather than relying only on a distance shown on a map.

Look at light, layout and everyday use

Stand in each room and imagine where your furniture would go. Check whether doors and circulation routes leave useful space. Notice window positions, privacy from neighbouring buildings and places to keep everyday items. If possible, return at a different time of day to understand how the light and surrounding activity change.

Ask about the shared spaces

A viewing should include the areas outside the apartment: stairs, lifts where present, parking, refuse storage and communal spaces. Ask who manages them, how maintenance is reported, and which services are shared. Request written information about any recurring charges and what they cover so that comparisons are based on the same information.

Leave with a record, not a rushed decision

Use the same checklist at every viewing. With permission, take photographs and record unanswered questions. A viewing helps you assess how a space may work for you; it does not establish ownership, condition or legal suitability. Arrange appropriate independent professional checks before making a commitment.
